The Wind River Range

The 428,169-acre Bridger Wilderness, became a wilderness under the Wilderness Act of 1964, it runs for 90 miles on the western side of the Wind River Mountains, featuring 27 active glaciers, 2,300 alpine lakes and more than 500 miles of trails. Most of the trails are snow free by early July. Off trail hiking is easily accomplished with the open terrain and a good topo map.

The 198,838-acre Fitzpatrick Wilderness lies on the northeast side of the range and lies next to the Bridger Wilderness. This area offers dozens of beautiful alpine lakes and views of 13,804 ft Gannett Peak.

The 101,991-acre Popo Agie Wilderness is full of rugged high peaks, deep valleys and lakes. More than 19 peaks stand taller than 13,000 feet with Wind River Peak being the tallest at 13,225 feet.

The Wind River Range encompasses over 5 million acres and gives the hiker over 600 miles of hiking trails to choose from and over 1,200 mountains lakes. Considered the premier hiking area of Wyoming.

Getting Started: East of Dubois on U.S. 287/26 look for a small sign. It shows the Wyoming Game and Fish Department Fish Hatchery. Turning south here the road forks right away, take the left fork. After about 2.5 miles the road forks again. Go East toward the Conservation Camp another 3.5 miles. At the camp the road forks aganin. Go right another 2 miles to the Fitzpatrick Wilderness Trailhead parking area. The trail starts here and offers numerous side trips along the way.
