One of the best hikes in Alaska
This trail gives you some of the best views of Denali (Mt. Mckinley) possible. The trail is about 28 miles long and requires 3-4 days to get the most out of it. It runs along Kesugi Ridge making it a great location to view North Americas highest mountain.
The scenery along the trail is worth the hike all by itself passing through endless tundra. Small and large lakes are also found along the trail and at the right time of year you can swim in them.
Be sure to bring rain gear and changes of socks due to mud and wet conditions. There are numerous boulder fields to cross which can be difficult footing when wet. No clear trail is obvious over these fields (mostly between miles 4 and 8) and it can be dangerous. Expect many stream crossings also. Be careful reading topo maps as many areas look the same.
USGS Quads: Talkeetna C-1, D-1;
Talkeetna Mountains C-6, D-6
Nearest Town: Talkeetna
How to get there: There are four trail access points on the Alaska Hwy. Mile 137.6 at the Upper Troublesome Creek Trailhead. Mile 147.0 at Byers Lake Campground, Ermine Hill Trailhead at Mile 156.5 and Little Coal Creek Trailhead at Mile 163.9.
Troublesome Creek Trail between the Upper Troublesome Creek Trailhead and alpine is closed until late 2009 due to severe flood damage. Several miles of the trail is completely washed out in the canyon area and is very difficult to traverse due to steep and brushy terrain. Please check to see if repairs have been made before starting your hike
