A place of unbelievable scenic beauty and few trails, route finding skill are a necessity. The park is the largest national park in the United States at over 13 million acres and has the largest wilderness, the Wrangell-St. Elias Wilderness at over 9,000,000 million acres. On top of this it boasts the second highest peak in the county, Mount Saint Elias at 18,008 ft.
The park is accessible by highway from two roads, both gravel. The McCarthy Road and the Nabesna Road. They both wind through the park giving some access to it's interior.
The only real access to Mount Saint Elias is by airplane or helicopter by way of Icy bay in the Gulf of Alaska. Flights are out of Silver City, Haines Junction, Burwash Landing in the Yukon, and from Alaska, Yakutat and Chitina River. If you think you would like to give it shot from the nearest road, well that would be McCarthy and Nabesna Road over one hundred miles away.

I would recommend using guides or outfitters if you plan on hiking in this area. They would know the safest areas to hike and get the most protection from frequent severe weather.
