Castner/Canwell Glacier Huts
The Alaska Alpine club have 3 huts in the Delta Range on Castner Glacier. The huts are available on a first come first serve basis at a $1 per person a night. The first hut (The Thayer Hut) was built started in 1961 and finished 4 years and 100 backpack trips later. The hut is 10x12 and sleeps 5 people.
Thayer Hut
Elevation: 4800 ft
Hike: 7.8 miles
Hike Time: 4 to 8+ hours
The second hut (Lower Canwell Hut) was built in 1968 on campus and carried up piece by piece and rebuilt. It is 12 by 12 ft and the entire floor covered with aluminum to keep critters out. To get to the hut in the summer use the use the Red Rock Canyon access
Elevation: 4200 ft
Hike: 5.8 miles
Hike Time: 3-6+ hours
The third hut (MacKeith Hut) was completely built and flown in by helicopter about 12 miles up the glacier.
Elevation: 5500 ft
Hike: 10.7 Miles
Hike Time: 5 to 7+ hours
