Shelf and Solitude Lake set high above the Glacier Gorge Trail in a hanging glacier valley. Thatchtop and Arrowhead peaks rise above the valley helping to form it. The area is wide open and invites exploration. As the name sake suggests you should find some solitude on this wonderful and amazing hike.

Cross-Country Skiing in Jewel Basin Montana
It's time to put the hiking boots away and get the ski boots out. Now is the time to start planning your cross-country ski trips and Jewel Basin is one area you should consider. Located east of Kalispell in the northern end of the Swan Mountains, Jewel Basin Hiking Area is 15,349-acres with 35-40 miles of marked ski trails. Most people climb into the area to alpine tour or telemark. The area also has a 3 mile and 6 mile ski-in. Bring skins and avalance gear. This is also a great winter camping area.
The main parking area is reached by following Highway 83 to the Echo Lake Road and then up to the Jewel Basin Road No. 5392. There is another western access off the Foothills Road turning onto Krause Creek Road No. 5390, on Strawberry Lake Trail #5, that takes you north of the Jewel Basin boundary.
From the east on the west side of the Hungry Horse Reservoir there are five forest roads branching from the main road.
